Dr. Barry R. Gillespie's
Quest For Natural Healing

My story may parallel your child's life. My parents found no options for natural healing available when I was young.

Your child, though, can find relief through natural therapies and healthy living principles for asthma; earaches (otitis media); hyperactivity; learning disorders; headaches; eye, sinus, and allergy conditions; scoliosis; and other chronic ailments that plague him or her today.

Before Natural Healing:
My Conditions

Sinus congestion, earaches, and throat ailments as a child

As early as I can remember, I regularly had colds, sinus congestion, earaches, sore throats, and swollen neck glands. At the age of seven, doctors removed my tonsils and adenoids. Throughout the school years I had many colds and also took allergy-sinus medication daily.

When attending junior high school, the eye doctor diagnosed astigmatism, and I wore corrective lenses.

Learning difficulties
My reading comprehension in school was especially poor. (Reading difficulties were not well understood in the 1950s.) I could read a paragraph, but my brain could not analyze its meaning.
I also found it difficult to put my thoughts clearly and logically into words. Writing this book would certainly have been an impossible task for me at that time.

I was a bright student but my brain was not working correctly at the time. This learning disability eliminated any possibility of entrance to an Ivy League college or a career that was language based, such as the legal profession.

Headaches, Sinus Infections, And Scoliosis

In my late twenties around the time I graduated from dental and periodontal schools, I experienced headaches and constant sinus infections and was eventually diagnosed with scoliosis.
Ultimately, I experienced eight of the ten conditions discussed in Healing Your Child. I never had asthma or was hyperactive.
I never grew out of my childhood conditions as the doctors had promised my parents.
The medical establishment could offer no corrective help, and I was miserable.

Natural Healing: My Journey

Resolving to find a way out of this predicament in 1977 at the age of thirty, I made it the primary goal in my life to become physically healthy.
Although I had just spent ten years in the medical educational system, I had little understanding of the concepts of natural healing and good health. I proceeded to examine every possible avenue that could result in physical well-being -- little did I know that I was in for the experience of my lifetime.
My search for natural healing led me to:
  • a healthy diet
  • principles for healthy living, and
  • the three effective therapies that form the basis of this book.

A Healthy Diet

All twelve of my closest relatives had died or were suffering from cardiovascular disease. I concluded that poor food choices were clearly a major factor, and positive dietary changes would play a vital role in determining the ultimate success of my personal quest for physical well-being.

So in my quest for good health I dramatically altered my dietary regimen.

Over a three-year period in the 1970s I eliminated the following items from my diet in a step-by-step manner: sugar and artificial sweeteners, processed foods, salt, meat, dairy, and all animal products.

The Outcome: More Energy and the Disappearance of my Sinus Infections

By following the dietary principles outlined in Chapter 5 of Healing Your Child, I simply had more energy for life.

Healthy Living Practices

I began practicing healthy living principles by eliminating all medications, cutting out alcohol consumption, and drinking spring water. I stretched my body for exercise, rested my body for healing, and continued to follow the guidelines established in Chapter 5 of my book Healing Your Child.

Craniosacral Therapy

When I stopped taking all medications in 1976, I could not avoid my headache problem any longer and had to search for a solution. Solving the incessant pain became a top priority in my life.

And that's how I came to craniosacral therapy -- a treatment consisting of gently loosening and realigning the skull and sacral bones.

Observing this technique of natural healing for the first time, I saw the caregiver simply hold the patient's head without doing anything. I felt very certain that cranial manipulation could not possibly help me. Yet, as a chronic headache sufferer, I was willing to try anything to get relief.
Reluctantly, I submitted myself to therapy . . .

The Outcome: Headache Pain Eliminated

After a series of treatments my head pain faded, never to return, and my sinuses started to unclog and open. I was enthralled by the power of craniosacral therapy and subsequently studied the concepts and techniques.

After evaluating the results of almost 2000 of my patients, I am convinced that a healthy craniosacral mechanism is a key element in attaining physical well-being.

Pfrimmer Deep Muscle Therapy

In 1980 I consulted a doctor for back strain. He diagnosed my curvature of the spine as scoliosis. When I asked what corrective therapy was available, he replied,

"At thirty-four years of age, this is an incurable condition. You just have to live with it."

Having found therapy for my headache and sinus problems, I knew there must be an answer for scoliosis if I continued my search for natural healing. If my spine was curved, I hypothesized, maybe tight muscles were pulling it out of alignment.

No doctor had ever checked my muscles, so in 1980 I consulted a Pfrimmer deep muscle therapist. He did find that chronic muscle tightness (rigidity) was pulling my body structures out of alignment. He began manipulative therapy to loosen or release the muscles and initiate correction of the scoliosis.

Myofascial Release Therapy

In 1984 I was introduced to myofascial release therapy, which involves working with the body's fascia. The fascia (not facial or of the face) is a layer of tissue analogous to plastic wrap that fuses with the muscle tissue.
Fascia forms a weblike structure that attaches to every structure in the body. It can become distorted and rigid from trauma and inflammation, causing tension and pain.
I underwent treatment, and later used the concepts to treat my own patients.

The Result Of Natural Healing: Almost All Of My Scoliosis Corrected

The combination of muscle and fascial therapies gradually corrected almost all my scoliosis, and my spine and body structures are now normal.

My Conclusions About
Natural Healing For Children

These principles and therapies changed my physical health and professional career dramatically . . .

While experiencing my own natural healing and observing patients, including many children, responding positively in my clinical practice, I concluded that:

  • diet and healthy living,
  • craniosacral therapy,
  • muscle therapy,
  • TMJ-dental therapy, and
  • myofascial release therapy

were important factors in attaining physical well-being.

If you view health as a jigsaw puzzle, these are key pieces of the total picture. These principles may provide the missing link in solving certain chronic conditions such as asthma; earaches (otitis media); headaches; hyperactivity; learning disorders; eye, sinus, and allergy conditions; scoliosis; and others.
